World Cup Highlights Difference Between 'Real Time' on Facebook, Twitter

World-cup-conversation
For nearly two hours on Thursday, Twitter's list of worldwide trending topics was dominated by hashtags like #GermanyvsUSA and #PORGHA for the two World Cup matches taking place. When Cristiano Ronaldo scored a goal for Portugal, the phrase "finally Ronaldo" started trending. When it was determined that the U.S. would advance to the next round to play Belgium, "USA vs Belgium" entered the list.
If you glanced at Facebook's trending section around the same time, however, you might not have realized either match was under way. When I checked Facebook halfway through the USA match, the top trending topic in my feed was about one of the players on Ghana's soccer team getting suspended, followed by a headline about North Korea's leader declaring actor Seth Rogen's latest movie an "act of war." The first news item had broken several hours before the game; the second had gained attention a day earlier.

Smart Glass' Could Produce DSLR-Quality Smartphone Photos

Smartphone-photo
Newly developed "smart glass" technology that mimics the shutter capabilities of a traditional camera could improve the pictures you snap on your smartphone. Researchers in Germany have developed a camera component for smartphones that helps adjust light, exposure and focus.
Traditional cameras have what photographers refer to as an aperture — overlapping blades around the inside of a lens that move mechanically to change the size and focus of the lens. The aperture is sometimes referred to as an "iris." Much like the iris of the human eye, it controls how much light enters the mechanism, which affects the image that is eventually produced. When it comes to cameras, the amount of light that touches the camera's sensors affect the overall focus of the picture you take.
Because of their size, smartphone cameras currently don’t have aperture mechanisms. "There is no technology today that can realize an iris aperture for smartphone cameras," said Tobias Deutschmann, physicist at the Technische Universitaet Kaiserslautern in Germany and lead-author of the study.

Smartphones Recycled Into Devices That Detect Deforestation

Rainforest-connection

Rainforests are full of exotic animals and plants. But one group is using technology to keep a check on particularly dangerous creatures — humans.
San Francisco startup Rainforest Connection is recycling old smartphones into devices that detect deforestation and alert authorities to illegal logging activity or poaching.
Hidden in trees, the solar-powered devices are programmed to pick up destructive sounds, such as chainsaws or alarmed animals, according to the company's Kickstarter page. An alert is then sent via text message to local authorities, who can then respond immediately. Also, anyone who downloads the Rainforest Connection app can listen live to the sounds of the Sumatra rainforest.
Topher White, founder of Rainforest Connection, became passionate about stopping illegal deforestation when he stumbled upon it. White's goal for the project is to provide the necessary tools to the people already actively working toward rainforest preservation. Indigenous tribes living in the rainforests are a vital part of the effort, White said.
"Our local partners are the most important step," White told Mashable. "It's really about who gets the alerts and who shows up in time."
Current anti-deforestation efforts are aided mainly by satellites, which do not provide live updates. This means responders are often too late to stop environmental crimes before they happen. But Rainforest Connection's device can detect exact locations and times, instantly providing information on which areas of the forest are in danger.

Walmart to Slash iPhone 5C and 5S Prices to $29 and $99 Friday

Walmart will cut the prices of the iPhone 5C and the iPhone 5S to $29 and $99 with a two-year contract Friday, a company spokesperson told CNET.
The savings amount to $20 (down from $49) for the iPhone 5C and $50 (down from $149) for the iPhone 5S, with the offer starting in Walmart stores at 9AM local time.
These are the prices for the 16GB versions of the devices; the prices will be lowered for 32GB variants as well, claims Engadget, but the details on that weren't made public yet.
Additionally, Walmart will also lower the price of the fifth-gen iPod Touch 16GB — from $209 to $195 — on Friday.
Walmart has launched similar deals before, but this one is permanent — a logical move since Apple is expected to launch at least one new version of the iPhone in the summer.
Radioshack has had a similar promotion for several weeks now, with the prices being identical to Walmart's: $99 for the iPhone 5S and $29 for the iPhone 5C.

How to Grow Your Blog to 100,000 Visits a Month Within 1.5 Years

I’ve done marketing for 20 of the top 100 blogs on the web, and I’ve created 3 blogs for my own businesses that achieved at least 100,000 visits a month.
With Quick Sprout, it took me 4 years and 9 months to hit 100,000 monthly visits:

Quantity is king

With Quick Sprout, I noticed slight gains when posting 2 pieces of content a week instead of 1. KISSmetrics only started to see big traffic increases when I started to publish 5 pieces of content a week. But with KISSmetrics, we went from publishing 2 a week straight to 5 a week.
This is why KISSmetrics had a much faster growth rate than Quick Sprout. In addition to that, we recently started testing posting 6 pieces of content a week instead of 5.

Flipkart Digiflip Pro XT712 first impressions: A solid debut in budget segment

Flipkart, whose tagline is ‘The Online Megastore” is now hoping to be more than just another e-commerce website. In a move, similar to what Amazon began with Kindle tablets, Flipkart announced the launch of its own tablet series under their new Digiflip Pro brand. The tablet is called Digiflip Pro XT712; and while the name might not be sleek and short, Flipkart is hoping to fill the gap when it comes it comes to low-end devices.

Add to that, the Digiflip Pro XT712 is priced Rs 9,999– a fairly reasonable sum– and comes with 1 year warranty, along with 24-hour-call centre support.

As far as specs go, it’s all pretty standard here: 7-inch, 1280×800 HD screen with IPS panel, MediaTek MT6582 quad-core chipset running at 1.3GHz and 1GB of RAM, 16 GB storage space and microSD slot with 32 GB limit. The Digiflip Pro XT712 also features dual-SIM functionality with 3G and voice calling support. It comes with a 5 megapixel rear camera and a 2 megapixel front camera.

Facebook update: 3 new things you need to know

LOS ANGELES — The new additions at Facebook over the past few days have been fast and furious, so let's take a quick minute to break them down.
1. Are you the sort who enjoys telling members of your social network what songs you're listening to or TV shows you're watching? If so, you're probably using apps like the popular Shazam to find them automatically for you.
Well, Facebook thinks it can make life easier for you, by not having to go to the bother of typing in the information anymore. A new tool, rolling out over coiming weeks, accesses the microphone from your smartphone, to pick out the name of the song, or TV show you're enjoying and automatically puts it into your post.
Why is Facebook doing this? To forge closer relationships with music and TV industries. If they know that you're a fan of Games of Thrones, or Justin Bieber, they have an easier sell to post ads from TV networks and record labels on your newsfeed as well. And perhaps ace apps like Shazam out of the picture.
2. As we all know, people use Facebook all the time to pick up on the opposite sex, find past boyfriends and girlfriends, and flirt like crazy.
Now Facebook is making it even easier. A new "Ask" button is being added to your profile that lets folks send you a direct message about your relationship — in other words, are you available?
Some words of advice: husbands and wives, if you don't want to start seeing these messages, or deal with the consequences of them, change your relationship status on Facebook. Make sure to say you're in one — otherwise, you might start receiving some thorny questions you don't want to deal with.
3. And speaking of privacy, Facebook also made minor changes to its settings for newbies. Until now, when folks signed up for Facebook, their posts were automatically directed to the public. But that confused folks, who didn't want all their stuff out there — not at first anyway — so Facebook is changing this. New posts will now only go to friends, until you go in and change your settings.
Folks have you looked at your Facebook settings in a while? The Memorial Day holiday might be a great time to take control of your settings and bring them up to date.

Google+ for Android gets flatter and faster with new update

Google+ loyalists, your time has come. Your social network of choice already hasautomatic photo journals, and now its Android app has gotten a hefty makeover to go with it. The update rolled out within the past few days -- it's aimed at making the G+ mobile experience simple, flatter and faster... especially if you're working with a bigger screen.
It's no secret Google's been trying on new looks for the G+ Android app, and the splashes of red and the floating pencil icon that lets you quickly craft updates were carried over from a leaked version spotted last month. Alas, the navigation bar that used to live along the bottom of the app is gone, while a revamped navigation menu provides fast access to your accounts and circles. The shift is reminiscent of what Google's already done with its new Docs and Sheets apps, but that doesn't mean the new look doesn't have its detractors. That once-beloved navigation drawer that pulled out from the left side is gone -- even while it lives on in other Google apps -- and some aren't thrilled with the lack of translucent menu bards. To each their own, right? With Google I/O right around the corner, we have to wonder if Google will encourage even more design changes that'll impact developers and users alike. The sheer number of leaks means our money's on "yes," but we'll all find out together soon enough.

5 Valuable Google Maps Tips and Tricks

Create a Multi-Stop Route

Google Maps used to only allow you to map out directions between two locations. Now, plan out a whole route in one go. When you input directions, click the plus sign directly under the directions to add another stop. Add as many as you want and plan the ultimate day, all in one sitting

tips and tricks for Chrome power users

Chrome tip No. 1Wish there were a way to keep videos and other Flash content from automatically playing when you open a page? There is: Type chrome://settings/content into Chrome's Omnibox (aka its address bar), scroll down to the section labeled "Plug-ins," and select "Click to play." Now, any piece of multimedia content will appear as a grayed-out box until you click to activate it.
Be aware that this may cause issues with certain websites; you'll probably want to click the "Manage exceptions" button and whitelist sites that rely heavily on plug-ins to operate -- YouTube, Vimeo, and Pandora, for instance -- in order to avoid any funky behavior.
Chrome tip No. 2You probably know you can drag tabs in and out of windows, but there's also a lesser-known shortcut in the tab management family: Middle-clicking a tab's title box (at the top of the browser window) will cause the tab to close.
Chrome tip No. 3Middle-clicking has another hidden use throughout Chrome: It will cause a link to open in a new tab in the background, so you can continue working in your current tab without interruption. It'll work with a link on a Web page as well as with an item in the drop-down list that appears when you type into the Omnibox.
Chrome tip No. 4If you don't like to middle-click, don't worry: Holding down the Ctrl (or Cmd) key while left-clicking will accomplish the same feat described in tip No. 3. Holding down Shift while left-clicking, meanwhile, will open the link in a new background window instead of a tab

YouTube 5.5 Update Introduces UI Tweaks

The app updates just keep coming. Joining Maps, Translate, and Wallet on the list of updated Google apps today, YouTube got a bump to 5.5.26, an update which brought with it several UI tweaks, and a new icon. Actually, the icon appears to be a mistake. Google has shipped out the Dogfood version of YouTube, meant for internal testing. As such, the updated app has a previously unseen "dogfood" settings screen with a few options related to "ExoPlayer."

Google: Penguin Update

What Is The Google Penguin Update?

Google launched the Penguin Update in April 2012 to better catch sites deemed to be spamming its search results, in particular those doing so by buying links or obtaining them through link networks designed primarily to boost Google rankings. When a new Penguin Update is released, sites that have taken action to remove bad links (such as through the Google disavow links tool or to remove spam may regain rankings. New sites not previously caught might get trapped by Penguin. “False positives,” sites that were caught by mistake, may escape.

Our Guide To Google Penguin:

Read Search Engine Land’s latest news related to Google Penguin updates:

No, Google Says There’s Been No Penguin Update

google-penguin-featuredThis morning, I noticed a lot of buzz around a possible Google Penguin update. The SEO space was noticing huge changes in the search results from previously penalized sites, many that were impacted by the Google Penguin update. The Google Penguin algorithm targets sites trying to manipulate their search results through link building efforts that they deem as unnatural. This is not the manual actions for unnatural links but rather an algorithm that detects these types of links automatically. A Google spokesperson told us at Search Engine Land, there is no Penguin or other spam efforts goi [...]

Lawyers Sue SEO Firm For Violating Google Guidelines

lawsuit-600A law firm in Michigan, Seikaly & Stewart, is suing its former SEO provider -- but not for a lack of ranking success. Rather, the firm is getting sued for allegedly using "spammy" techniques violating Google's guidelines. That comes via Eric Goldman. The defendant Rainmaker Institute, which specializes in online marketing services for the legal profession, is accused knowingly violating Google SEO guidelines by building "link farms" on behalf of the plaintiff's several legal domains. It's not clear from the complaint (also embedded below) whether the plaintiff law firm suffered a [...]

New Android Update Confirmed for Google I/O Reveal

With Google I/O officially set to kick off tomorrow morning at 9 AM, Sundar Pichai, Google’s man in charge of Android just revealed some extremely important information a day early. In a massive interview with Bloomberg full of information about his rise with Google, Pichai confirmed the next version of Android “L” will be previewed tomorrow.
In previous years Google’s been rather quite regarding Android and its upcoming changes. Last year Google didn’t say a word about a new version of Android at Google I/O, and instead just unleashed it onto the world at the end of October. This year however, Google wants to show the world and all its users where Android is headed, and what they can expect later this year.
The last time we saw an early preview of Android before it was actually released and revealed by Google was over three years ago with Android 3.0 Honeycomb. What this means is now that Sundar Pichai is in charge of Android (and Chrome) he wants to shake things up and aims to offer consumers and developers an early look, and give us something to look forward to.

How to Earn Money Through Google Adsense

Method 1 of 3: Creating an Ad Unit

  1. 1
Sign into your AdSense account. Go to AdSense, and click on My ads in the upper left.
    • Create a new Ad unit. In the main screen area, under Content > Ad units, click the +New ad unit button.
      Create ad unit.png
    Ad
  2. 2
Name your ad unit. This can be any name that suits you, but many find creating a standard naming format helps them manage large amounts of data.
    • For example, using [target site for the ad]_[ad size]_[ad date] is one approach, that would look like this: mywebsite.com_336x280_080112. Whatever format you decide to use for naming, make that your standard.
  3. 3
Pick a size. See "How to Do It" below for details, but Google has found best practices that generate more clicks.
  4. 4
Set your ad type. This determines the types of ads you will see on your website: text only; text and image/rich media; and image/rich media only.
  5. 5
Create a custom channel. A custom channel lets you group ad units however you choose, such as by size or location on a page.
    • You can track performance by custom channel, and turn your channel into a targetable ad placement so advertisers can target their ads to your ad units.
  6. 6
Create your ad style. This lets you choose colors for the various components of an ad: border, title, background, text, and URL. It also lets you choose corner styles, from square to very rounded, a font family, and a default font size.
    • It's good practice to create an ad style that harmonizes with the look and colors of your website.
    • You can use Google's presets, or use your own custom settings. In either case, a sample ad on the right will show you how your ad will appear
      Google custom settings.png
  7. 7
Get the code for the ad. When you're done with the ad setup, either save your ad unit, or click the Save and get code button at the bottom to get the HTML code for your site.
    • If adding code to your site is a puzzle you want help with, click here for Google's code implementation guide.
